The chef behind modernist Racion and The Bible Club’s kitchen, Anthony Cafiero established the Function event space in July, at 919 NW 23rd Ave., and it is now hosting both private and public events, with a focus on beverage-focused pop-ups. That includes Cafiero’s new, very own Dungeons & Dragons-themed pop-up series, Orcs! Orcs! Orcs!.
On September 4, Orcs! Orcs! Orcs! kicks off with a “tavern” themed meal inspired by fantasy and historic cuisine. Think whole roasted pig, homemade pickles, cheeses, jams, rustic bread from Ken’s Artisan Bakery, and a mug of punch. Cafiero is also offering a vegetarian stew and flagons of Pono Brewing beer and Reverend Nat’s Revival Cider.
Once dinner’s complete, things get serious. A game of Dungeons & Dragons commences, with five Dungeon Masters running games for up to twenty guests, divided into groups of four. Cafiero tells Eater beginners are encouraged to attend. Function’s subterranean vibes, with concrete walls and leather booths, should be a natural fit.

Tickets to Orcs! Orcs! Orcs! are available at Feastly, with dinner costing $20 and the gaming experience an additional $20 (those who attend dinner are welcome to stay and watch the games). Cafiero says, at least for the first pop-ups, funds will be reinvested in enhancing the overall experience.
Function is now available for booking private events by emailing gather@functionpdx.com. The venue posts upcoming events on its Facebook page.
