The owners behind Tube, Fortune, and Revelry — the latter through a partnership with powerhouse Seattle chefs Rachel Yang and Seif Chirchi Eric and Karen Bowler are a driving force in Portland nightlife, delivering a sleek style punctuated by world-class DJs and craft cocktails. The husband and wife team tell Eater they’re ready to unveil their latest project: A music-centric bar called Maxwell, which will replace the Black Book bar at 20 NW 3rd Ave., right next door to Tube, in Old Town.

“It’s a tiny little spot with a capacity of 49,” says Eric Bowler, “but we are going to put in an amazing sound system and book great DJs.”

The Bowlers tell Eater Revelry bar manager Mike Harmata will design the cocktail list. Since Revelry opened in 2016, it has served one of the city’s best happy hours and brought a food-forward late-night dining option to Southeast.

The Black Bar space will be closed for about four weeks to remodel. The Bowlers aim to open Maxwell in its place by late September or early October.
