Chris Cosentino’s Jackrabbit Nabs Sustainable Architecture Award — and Other Intel

And a hot new noodle dish at Rose VL

Jackrabbit

Jackrabbit, the meaty new-ish restaurant from San Francisco chef Chris Cosentino has earned an award for its modern, woody interior. The American Institute of Architects’ Nevada chapter handed out citation awards (the highest level available to five completed projects, and the Portland establishment was the only commercial building to take those honors. The award goes to the restaurant’s design firm, Punch Architecture (a Nevada-based firm: that’s why the restaurant earned an award from that state, and not Oregon). Here’s what the Institute’s jurors had to say:

“Strong branding with playful engagement connect this well-appointed project within its context. Beautifully executed space planning, material selection and creative detailing stimulate visual experience on multiple scales. Appropriately balanced wood, metal and ceramic elements allow for moments of levity that are well executed to keep guests sensually entertained.”

— The Scholls Ferry location of brewpub Uptown Market closes its doors temporarily this Saturday (January 13), to undergo renovations. It’ll likely be out of action for a few weeks — there’s a closing party from 6 p.m. Saturday that will feature a host of Modern Times beers. It’s billed as “come wreck the place” and the flyer mentions sledgehammers, so feel free to bring your heavy, destructive tools, but maybe don’t use them unless it’s, like, actually allowed.

According to the Oregonian, Vietnamese soup mavens Rose VL have added cao lau to the menu, a porky noodle dish that’s extremely common in the central Vietnam tourist hotspot Hoi An, but pretty rare here. It’ll be served only on Saturdays for now.

— Kenny Giambalvo, the executive chef of Ristorante Pazzo up until its recent closure, is now going to helm the kitchen at Jory, the slick restaurant at Willamette Valley resort, The Allison Inn & Spa. Giambalvo was meant to return to Pazzo’s replacement in Kimpton Hotel Vintage (opening in a few months), so this solves the mystery of where he’s going instead.

— Swanky Hotel deLuxe restaurant Gracie’s has a new executive chef: it’s Juan Zaragoza, who was previously at the Waverly Country Club and was also on the opening team at Imperial. He’s going to focus on “elevated classics” — think a lobster tail pot pie, or lamb loin chops.

— North Mississippi “gourmet industrial” spot Quaintrelle is doing a comfort food special on Thursdays throughout the winter. Chicken and Beer Thursdays will (unsurprisingly) give you roasted chicken and draft beer, all in for $19, starting next week (January 18). Enjoy this gratuitous chick pic.
