Nong’s Announces New Downtown Restaurant Location

More chicken, more rice

Nong’s Khao Man Gai

Portland food cart icon Nong’s Khao Man Gai is making another expansion, as owner Nong Poonsukwattana announced via Instagram this weekend that she’ll be opening a new downtown brick and mortar location for her namesake business.

While the announcement didn’t specify a location, some careful observation of the accompanying photo reveals the restaurant’s address: it looks to be moving in at 417 SW 13th Avenue, right near Burnside. The space formerly housed a Heart Pizza location until it recently closed its doors, and the black storefront and Heart Pizza signage gives it away.

The announcement bills it as a new location (and not a new project), so it’s safe to expect that iconic khao man gai, the Thai take on Hainanese chicken and rice, will be central.

This is Nong’s fourth location after the original cart, the PSU outlet, and the sit-down Southeast restaurant. It seems most likely that the downtown location will take after the first brick and mortar restaurant which opened in 2014 and offers a longer menu that includes pork and vegetarian items, desserts, and a full bar.
