Beloved dive bar and burger spot The Lay Low Tavern was robbed by armed gunmen in the early hours of the morning, Koin first reported. Though little information is currently available, a police report said that three masked robbers, two armed with guns and one with a taser, forced patrons to the ground at 2:30 a.m. and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was reported injured in the encounter.
A sergeant with Portland Police told Eater PDX that there were only three people in the bar at the time, including the bartender, and that all three suspects were male of unknown race. He also cautioned that “If a business is robbed, we encourage victims and witnesses to cooperate so as not to escalate the situation into a more serious situation.” Anyone with additional information about the crime should contact Portland Police at (503) 823-0412.
The Lay Low Tavern opened in March of 2017 as a sort-of-replacement to the demolished Club 21. Owned by the same team as Club 21, as well as Sandy Hut, Double Barrel, The Alibi Lounge, and Gold Dust Meridian, the bar specializes in low-priced drinks, food specials, and build-your-own-burgers, with a small smoking patio out back and photo booth inside.
This is a developing story and will be updated with any new information.
