Soft-shell crab po’boys, smoked jackfruit sandwiches, and brisket-topped pizzas will come to NE Broadway and 22nd in December. MD’s BBQ, a new restaurant from the folks behind Miss Delta, will offer a new family-friendly spot in the Irvington-meets-Sullivan’s Gulch neighborhood, with brunch, a massive kid’s menu, and house-smoked meats.
Owner Marcus Oliver grew up cooking with his grandmother in Alabama, where he fell in love with Southern food. After years in the Portland culinary scene, Oliver bought Miss Delta, adding more barbecue to the then-primarily Cajun/Creole menu. Since then, the barbecue has become increasingly popular, inspiring the owner to open a second location. MD’s new 75-seat restaurant can certainly accommodate a larger crowd and menu, with seasonal outdoor seating and a smoker straight from Georgia.
Of course, the restaurant will focus on barbecue, but MD’s will also be much more experimental than Miss Delta, including the restaurant’s first vegan sandwich with jackfruit and pizzas topped with andouille, pulled pork, and brisket. Oliver also plans to find permanent homes for successful Miss Delta specials, like its brisket chili. Another new addition will be she crab soup, a classic seafood bisque from the Carolinas.
The restaurant will have a bar, as well, with 11 beer and cider taps and one wine tap. Spirit hounds will be happy to know the restaurant will also serve cocktails cherry-picked from the other restaurant’s menu. MD’s will feel far less bar-like, however; Oliver says he wants the restaurant to feel like a family spot, hence his large kid’s menu with desserts. MD’s is expected to open during the first week of December.
