Andy Ricker’s Thai food empire continues to grow in Portland. Pok Pok Wing West, the James Beard winning chef’s fast-casual wing counter, just opened on SW Barbur Boulevard at 11:30 a.m. Monday, December 17, serving the restaurant’s famous fish sauce wings.
The first Pok Pok Wing location on SE Milwaukie doesn’t only serve Southeast Asia’s caramely, funky wings recreated by Ricker and Pok Pok’s first employee, Ich “Ike” Truong. The menu is filled with playful, casual dishes like stuffed steam buns with fried chicken or sweet pork, as well as a deep-fried chicken dog smothered in the wings’ savory caramel sauce. The new restaurant isn’t website-official yet, so no word similarities between the two menus; Ricker announced his plans to open the restaurant on Instagram, saying the team is matching wing orders with equivalently priced gift cards today.
This fall, Ricker chose to open within the former Humdinger Drive-In, which had been open for 37 years. This is Ricker’s second restaurant on the west side of the river, joining Pok Pok NW; that’s not counting the private Pok Pok within the Nike campus in Beaverton. At least non-Nike Southern suburbanites can grab a quick wing to-go on the way home. Eater PDX has reached out to Ricker for more information; stay tuned for updates.
