While Portland coffee institution Boyd recently announced its impending closure, Portland’s coffee scene persistently expands. Several local coffee brands have announced plans to open new shops, while another has already begun pouring espresso and hawking stroopwafels. Prince Coffee, a Kenton mainstay for fruity, bright roasts and the caramel-laced pastry, opened a second location in the Beaumont neighborhood. Right now, the coffee shop is pouring Aussie Instagram favorite Proud Mary’s coffee, as well as Roseline and Heart roasts. The new location is open at 4523 NE Fremont Street.

Coming soon, celebrated local roaster Good coffee will continue to bring great single-source roasts to new Portland neighborhoods; this June, Good will open a Slabtown location on 2175 NW Raleigh Street. The company currently has two other locations on Division and SE 12th.

Across the river, Sellwood’s Either/Or — named for the Elliot Smith album about Kierkegaard, which wins it the award for most Portland coffee shop — plans to open a second location at 4003 N Williams this May, serving its popular beverage flights. Once the cafe gets rolling, Either/Or will also have a full bar opening in June with coffee cocktails and DJs playing soul music. The original location remains open, just celebrating its fifth birthday in March.

For something a little less third-wave, Oregon-based coffee chain The Human Bean will open another location on NE Sandy this month. This is the company’s first location in Portland, although it has set up shop in Texas, Colorado, and Arizona. The Human Bean is more a coffee kiosk than a sit-and-work spot, so all the East side commuters now have another place to roll through on the way downtown.
