Compared to the gush of restaurant openings this spring, the summer has been closer to a trickle, with only a handful of restaurants welcoming diners in June. This is the week things get back to normal: In the next three days, the staff of five anticipated restaurants will begin flipping burgers, baking bread, and pouring wine, from natural wine bars to drive-thru counters. Here’s what you need to know about each:
Meet the crew bringing PDX burgers with STRENGTH! This amazing group of folks have been put thru the paces this week and are gonna be waiting for ya come Monday. Props to Jay and Greg for putting together such a stellar crew. Big shout out to Hannah, Laura, Gail, Maria, Kylee, Maleah, Delilah, Nick, Mikael, Amber, Kat, Eric, Jennifae, Michael, and Colin for a great training week. They let me ramble on and obsess about the finer nuances of burger sauce, changing fryers, and Cambro vs Winco lids (seriously, why don’t you fit universally!!). Plus this whole crew got in-depth espresso skillz thanks to the one and only @stumptowncoffee . Things are about to get real next week, and I couldn’t ask for a better crew to throw down with.
The spiel: Super Deluxe is the new burger place from casual connoisseurs Matt Lynch and Micah Camden (Boxer Ramen), and it’s delivering the Americana goods in a thoroughly Portland way. We’re talking fresh fries, house chicken nuggets, hash brown tots, and of course, stacked burgers and breakfast sandwiches.
When it opens: It’s already open, brah. Super Deluxe opens bright-and-early at 6 a.m. weekdays — the spot will open at 7 and 8 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays, respectively. Monday, July 16, is its first day of business.
Where it is: 5000 SE Powell Boulevard
Pro tip: Super Deluxe is open until midnight Sundays through Thursdays and until 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, but that really refers to the drive-thru. The dining room closes at 10 p.m.
Tired of being hungry by 3pm because your leafy greens left your tummy growling? You work hard and you play hard! Fuel up with a N E L L A Panzanella - all the veggies you could want but with the just enough bread to keep you full! Available July 16th exclusively on Caviar - link to our website in our profile. . . . . #lunchlikeanitalian #savealoaf #anellaaday #trycaviar #eaterpdx #pdxeats #healthyish #foodandwine #dishedportland
The spiel: Nella, a delivery-only luncheonette dedicated to Italian bread salads, is the pet project of Jasper Smith (Bar Casa Vale) and Ella McCallion. The couple sources bread from local bakeries, tossed with fresh and preserved vegetables like roasted red peppers, kalamata olives, roasted leeks, or fresh tomatoes.
When it opens: 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 16
Where it is: Nella is exclusively on Caviar
Pro tip: Get $5 off this week with the code EATERPDXLOVESNELLA.
Von Ebert Brewing — East Side
The spiel: Von Ebert, the brewery from the folks behind Fat Head’s and The Commons brewer Sean Burke, opens its second location in a year on the Glendoveer Golf Course today, with a wide variety of beer styles, plus casual brewpub fare. It’s a family-friendly spot, so feel free to bring the kids after some time on the green.
When it opens: 11 a.m. Monday, July 16
Where it is: 14021 NE Glisan Street
Pro tip: Von Ebert 2 will have both covered and uncovered patios, just in case you’re picky about al fresco dining
The spiel: Natural wine lovers already know Dana Frank from her years at Ava Gene’s and Dame, but now, you can get up close and personal with the super sommelier at her intimate new wine bar. The spot will have a whopping 30 wines by the glass on its opening day.
When it opens: 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 17
Where it is: 2615 SE Clinton Street
Pro tip: Wine nerds, get pumped — local wine producers Bow & Arrow will be in the house tomorrow night.
The spiel: Eastern European food nerds have probably already hit Kargi Gogo. This Georgian truck-turned-restaurant has been sporadically open for weeks, testing various dumplings and stuffed breads at the new restaurant. New to the menu will be a smattering of salads and vegetable-based sides that never really hit the original cart.
When it opens: The spot will be reliably open starting this Wednesday, July 18.
Where it is: 3039 NE Alberta Street
Pro tip: Check out the restaurant’s instagram — the team often posts dates and hours for temporary openings, so you could possibly get in before Wednesday.
