Borderline-twee doughnut shop Blue Star will turn on the fryers at its gargantuan new factory and event space August 27. The Portland-based doughnut-makers, known for out-there flavors like blueberry bourbon basil and passionfruit cacao nib, decided to level up earlier this year: The Oregonian broke the news about the new location in May, which will inhabit a whopping 5,000 square feet in the 12th and Morrison building downtown.
Inside, dough enthusiasts will spot an open-air commissary kitchen, retail space, and even a “chef’s counter,” aka where head pastry chef Stephanie Thornton will play around with new flavors and styles of buttermilk, brioche, and vegan cake doughnuts. Starting 10 a.m. Monday, Blue Star will give out free doughnuts at the new location, 1155 SW Morrison St. Suite 102, until sold out. Regular hours begin August 28, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. or sold out.
