Portland is Getting its First Esports Bar Next Month

Outrage will serve pub grub and cocktails alongside video games

While Portland has a number of pinball and arcade bars, it lacks a dedicated esports bar. That will change this September with the long-awaited arrival of downtown Portland’s Outrage, a bar where guests can play competitive video games and watch live-streaming esport competitions. Outrage will serve as a space for solitary and social gamers, with game-themed cocktails and a variety of stations for solo and multi-player gaming.

Co-owners Jeff Hotes and Justin Green, two Seattle gamers and service industry vets, announced plans to open Outrage in a Portland Monthly story over a year ago, originally hoping to start up in the summer of 2017. The two wanted to fill a void: There is considerable enthusiasm for esports in the Northwest, but no real bar venue for it. The two decided to move south, landing on the former Witherspoon event space at 424 SW 4th Avenue.

The bar retained the Witherspoon’s exposed brick walls and hardwood floors, juxtaposed against high-tech flat-screen TVs, computers, and modular leather furniture that fill the room. A dozen computers will be free to play, loaded with online games including League of Legends, Overwatch, and Fortnite. Likewise, multiple consoles with flat screen TVs around the space will be available for competitive play, with a focus on fighting games. Flat screens above the bar and through the room will also stream a variety of esport games at all times.

The food and drink menu is fairly straightforward, with cocktails carrying video game-inspired names (“First Blood,” after the competitive esports site) ranging from $8 to $12. The kitchen will focus on bar staples — burgers and fries, pretzels, and tacos — though neither menu has been finalized at this time.

Outrage will initially open with hours from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., staying open late for industry workers who want to grab a drink and play some video games after a shift. Hotes and Green expect to open around September 20.
