Portland’s Pizza Boom Continues With Soon-to-Open Detroit-Ish Pizzeria

From the man behind Nuvrei, Pop Pizza will top thick, square pizza slices with things like cabbage, caraway and sausage

Brooke Jackson-Glidden is the editor of Eater Portland.

Portland’s pizza scene has exploded in the last year, and it shows no sign of stopping: Ranch continues to expand, Gracie’s opened a restaurant in St. Johns, even Nick Zukin of Mi Mero Mole opened a pizzeria with Mexican toppings. And it seems that the pizza explosion will continue in 2020 with the opening of Pop Pizza, a new Detroit-Roman pizzeria from the pastry giant behind Nuvrei.

The Oregonian reports that Pop Pizza will incorporate owner Marius Pop’s roots: Pop was born in Romania and has family in Detroit, so the thick-crust pan pies will come with topping combinations like cabbage, caraway, and sausage. But it’s not all about novelty flavors: Pop Pizza will also have more standard toppings in pre-cut slices. The pizzeria will open in early 2020 at 610 SE Morrison Street.
