Burnside Brewing, the nine-year-old brewery known for its Sakura-Pome Gose and Burnside Stout, has closed suddenly. Last night, a Reddit post claimed that the brewery, which closed for a “snow day” yesterday, had laid off all employees without notice. “Effective Tuesday, February 5th, Burnside Brewing is no longer operational,” a screenshot of an message to employees reads. “It is not certain that we will be able to make payroll this Friday... we will be in touch with paycheck information as soon as we are able.”
Then, today, a user uploaded a photo of a notice of lockout and termination of tenant’s right to possession posted on the brewery’s door. According to the notice, Alchemy Brewing Company LLC, the business license name behind Burnside, has been kicked out of the property; the landlord has changed the locks because “no payments have been made to the landlord in months.” Eater has confirmed that the notice remains posted on the brewery’s door; a former employee who chose to remain anonymous has confirmed that employees were laid off without notice via email.
The Barnett Firm, the legal team representing the building’s landlord, chose not to comment publicly on the notice. Calls, emails, and Facebook messages to Burnside Brewing have gone unanswered.
Correction: A previous version of this story misstated the name of the landlord’s LLC. The landlord’s LLC is 701 East Burnside, not Alchemy Brewing Company LLC.
