There is officially too much news this week. Beyond the opening of the hugely popular pop-up Gado Gado’s restaurant and the impending opening of the chic, minimalist restaurant Berlu, the release of Eater’s Guide to the Pacific Northwest is setting up Portland for one hell of a summer. Still, there is so much more to cover before the weekend begins. Here are the highlights:
BOUNCERS BOUNCED — To start with the particularly dreadful, two security guards at White Owl Social Club threw out a trans-identifying person for entering the women’s bathroom. White Owl fired the two security guards who reportedly dragged Alex Schwarting out of the women’s restroom, and is continuing to investigate the situation. [KATU, Willamette Week]
GENE’S BACK — Italian institution Ava Gene’s returns this weekend, with reservations available Sunday and a lightly redecorated dining room. Eventually, the restaurant plans to add more pastas and desserts, but for now, the menu’s major changes include a list of non-alcoholic cocktails, house gelatos, and even more giardini. [EPDX]
INTERMISSION — Two Portland steak institutions are closing temporarily this summer. Acropolis, the strip club known for its steaks, has closed due to a liquor license issue: Owner Haralambos “Bobby” Polizos died earlier this year, and because wife and co-owner Diane Polizos wasn’t listed on the liquor license, the bar was unable to sell alcohol. Ringside Steakhouse is doing some quick-and-dirty renovations, closing for a portion of July and August. Both restaurants should reopen before the summer ends, with Ringside’s listed reopening date on August 10.
CHEAP EATS — Portland’s $1 Food “Festival” is now live, which means Portlanders can get dishes like burrito bowls, Olympia Provisions franks, miso ramen, spicy tuna rolls, and chicken shawarma for $1. Those interested should download Ritual and search “DOLLARFEST” to see which meals they can order and pick up. [EaterWire]
ROSÈ BUFFET — OK Omens recently revamped their happy hour menu, which includes its $8 burger and, most excitingly, the restaurant’s “rosé buffet”: Visitors get a magnum of pink dropped at their tables on ice, and they can drink as much as they want for about $6/glass. At the end, Ok Omens weighs the bottle and only charges them for what they drink. Take a full look at the happy hour menu here. [EaterWire]
