A New Neighborhood Watering Hole Will Replace Soccer-Themed Bar 4-4-2

Gol will loosen up on the strict-soccer theme, though an amateur soccer player has purchased the space

Portland’s soccer fans lost a classic game night spot this year: 4-2-2, a SE Hawthorne bar known for its hardcore soccer theme, closed with little announcement earlier this summer. That being said, a spot for Timbers games will soon take over the abandoned space.

4-2-2 regular and amateur soccer player Peter Mahr has purchased the bar in June to transform it into Gol, Willamette Week reports. Gol will retain much of the same soccer-centric spirit as 4-2-2, but Mahr says that Gol will expand its interests and audience — he wants the bar to be a place where people can just come and have a drink, regardless of what’s on the tv. He says the food menu, which was formerly Bosnian, will change as well.

He’s been pretty tight-lipped with the details, but the bar should reopen in mid-September at 1739 SE Hawthorne Blvd. For those desperate for a soccer bar in the meantime, Toffee Club is blocks away.
