There will be a new place to dine and drink in Montavilla within the next few months. Rocket Empire Machine, a new project from the team behind The Zipper, will be home to a taproom and four micro-restaurants, with indoor and outdoor seating to share.
Guerrilla Development, a development agency in Portland focused on non-gentrifying, community-oriented spaces, is renovating a former auto mechanic’s building for the small food court. Guerrilla decided to revive the mechanic’s name — Rocket Empire Machine — for the new space.
“When we presented it to the neighborhood association, everyone was super excited to get more food options nearby,” says Ben Carr of Brett Schulz Architect, the architect on the project. “Lots of community building will happen here.”
Gigantic Brewing will cover the bar side of things, with a taproom the brewery is calling “Gigantic Satellite.” According to a press release, Gigantic Satellite will open in January 2020. Guerrilla has yet to reveal the other micro-restaurants, but the spots will share communal seating inside and outside the food hall; stay tuned for updates. The food hall will open at 6935 NE Glisan, near the border between North Tabor and Montavilla.
