March will be a good month for ramen-heads in Beaverton. Afuri, the Japanese ramen shop with two locations in Portland proper, will open an izakaya on 1st Street, compete with the lacy gyoza, robata skewers, and the noodle soup that made the company famous.
Between Kizuki, Yuzu, and Ramen Ryoma, Beaverton already has a very good ramen scene. Still, the addition of Afuri will be a serious step up: Afuri is the only ramen restaurant on Portland’s map of essential restaurants, thanks to its light and citrusy yuzu-bolstered broths and rich and nutty tonkotsu tantanmen. The restaurant serves more than just noodles, however, with a working robata grill, sushi, and a number of small snacks like karaage and house-made tofu.
Director of culinary operations Grant Macdonald and project manager Liz Allan say the new restaurant will have a very similar menu to the location in Southeast Portland, with a few additions to be disclosed. Afuri is also known for its sake and Japanese whisky lists; the Beaverton restaurant will have a bar as well, so devotees can expect libations alongside their tsukemen and sashimi. With 85 seats, the new location will be a touch smaller than the Southeast Portland location; however, the new restaurant will have a private dining space to reserve for events.
Afuri Beaverton will open March 18 at 12577 SW 1st Street in Beaverton; stay tuned for more details.
