When Chad Draizin, the owner of Portland ice cream standby Fifty Licks, decided to open a new ice cream shop in Northwest Portland, he knew what his design inspiration would be: a pair of coral Adidas.
“I like that one-color look,” Draizin says. “One time, I was in New York buying a Metro pass. and RuPaul was ahead of me. He was wearing a red shirt, red shoes, red jeans, and a red hat. He looked amazing.”
Draizin isn’t getting into the specifics of the design just yet, but the new ice cream shop — his third — will be his largest. The Oregonian broke the news of Fifty Licks’ first westside location, a 24-seat scoop shop within the Carson Apartments (home to places like G-Love and Carioca Bowls). The shop will be similar to all of the other locations, with flavors like soy sauce caramel and mango sticky rice; however, Draizin’s new challenge is making half of his ice cream menu completely vegan, so it’s likely that menu may change across stores as the years go on. Fifty Licks Slabtown should open by late April in 2121 NW Raleigh Street.
