As many restaurants struggle with dips in business related to COVID-19 social distancing, another side of the food industry is booming, and not necessarily in a good way. Grocery stores have been fighting crowds and long wait times on delivery services like Amazon Prime and Instacart, operating on reduced hours and, in many cases, with reduced staff. While some grocery chains are restricting how many people can enter the store at any given time, the risk of crowds has many Portlanders concerned about the safety of their grocery shopping.
However, there are more grocery options out there beyond the standard supermarket; smaller specialty stores, restaurants, restaurant suppliers, and farms have begun offering curbside pickup or delivery, with shorter wait times than the standard apps. Large grocery store chains like Safeway, Fred Meyer, and others remain open during this period, but this guide focuses on smaller grocery options, including delivery, curbside pickup, and CSAs. This guide will continue to get updates as social distancing measures continue; feel free to send tips to the Eater Portland tipline.
