One of Portland’s Longstanding, Celebrated Restaurateurs Is Back in Action May 1

With the writing clearly on the wall, chef and restaurateur Vitaly Paley closed all of his restaurants on March 15, the day before Gov. Kate Brown gave the order to close dining rooms in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of pivoting to takeout and delivery like many other places, the chef kept his kitchens entirely closed, but on May 1 his pizzeria the Crown will be back in business, serving an updated menu with new items for curbside takeout and delivery.

Rather than one of the more upscale restaurants like the iconically Northwestern Paley’s Place or seafood spot Headwaters, the team decided to open the most casual branch of the Paley empire, the one most conducive to takeout. “Now that we see some sort of citywide opening in the future, we thought it made sense to open our most casual restaurant, which is capable of putting out delicious food available for carry-out,” says Paley. “I’ve always said that people are challenged by so much in their daily lives and they shouldn’t be challenged by food. That statement is certainly true now. That’s why we’re back with fantastic pizza, local beer, pastas, and other delicious items that bring comfort.”

That comfort food comes in the form of some Crown staple pies like pepperoni, margherita, and its iconic Imperial pizza with fried chicken, pickles, and honey, as well as some new additions — customers can now find robust baked pasta dishes like lasagna or mushroom penne with truffle marmalade, as well as sandwiches like fried chicken, meatball sliders, and a veggie panini. Sides like smoked brisket meatballs are also new, and fans of the neighboring restaurant Imperial will be happy to know its fried chicken will make an appearance as well.

Family meals called “stimulus packages” will serve three to four people, and come with pizza or pasta, salads, and sides. Bottles of wine and growlers of beer will also be available, with growlers clocking in at $10 and wines in the teens and $20s.

The Crown will be open for curbside takeout from 3 to 8 p.m. daily, and diners can call ahead at (503) 228-7224. Delivery will be available the same hours via Caviar. Find the menu below.
