Cheers can mean "thank you" or "yay!" or "good luck." Right now it means I'm raising a glass to my lips to celebrate a week as guest editor for Eater Portland. Next week say hey to Erin DeJesus who will be keeping you posted on openings, closings, celebrity breakdowns and whatnot. Keep her posted, too, via Eater's secret tipline.

Well, it was a beautiful pizza. Longtime Southeast Belmont Street staple It's a Beautiful Pizza closed its doors in February. A review from Stumptown Vegans gives an idea of what the vibe was like:

The pizza is touted as "legendary" and their aptly named specialty pizzas are named after music legends: Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Ravi Shankar, Jimi Hendrix and just "Jerry." I don't know about legendary, but the veganized Ravi Shankar featuring their special peanut-tamari sauce, roasted coconut, scallions, shredded carrots, peanuts, tofu and cilantro is quite talked about among my friends.
The roomy space will now be occupied by Hall of Records, which will be a bar/restaurant of some kind (tipsters can be a little vague) and will have DJs, and will not have a copy of your birth certificate (so bring your valid ID if you want a beer). Opening date TBA.

Last night the IACP handed Lisa Schroeder, the force of nature behind Mother's Bistro & Bar and Mama Mia Trattoria, the award for Chef/Restaurateur of the Year. Though Schroeder is a Portlander, and the IACP conference is in Portland this week, competition for the award is national. The category is a new one this year for the segment of IACP awards labeled Awards of Excellence, which are open to IACP members only. Schroeder has been a media magnet since she first opened Mother's in 2000, first winning Willamette Week's Restaurant of the Year and after that about a zillion other local and national awards and "best of"s and praise for her cookbook, Mother's Best. AND she gets to hobnob with famous editor Judith Jones (right in photo, Lisa in center.)
·All Previous Lisa Schroeder Coverage [EaterPDX]

Downtown's Portland Coffee House is the object of a major rebranding, and will reopen as the high-end coffee joint Public Domain on April 30. From Willamette Week:

Portland's largest roaster, Coffee Bean International, which roasts "private label" coffees for large national brands, will open a showcase cafe called Public Domain at the end of April that promises to hit all the buzzwords: micro-lots, seasonal menus, artisan-roasted.
This, despite the fact that they also roast coffee for Target. An operative reports the windows are stylishly papered-over with sheets depicting the cafe's logo -- is it a chess pawn or maybe a Chemex coffeemaker? -- and, visible through the door, boxes, cleaning supplies, and a constellation of dangling spotlights. Public Domain comes as part of a jittery onslaught of new coffee houses geared towards the kind of hardcore coffee geek who prefers an espresso machine to a sports car and wants to know the exact altitude where beans were grown. How many of these people are there, anyway?
·Previous Coffee Wars Coveragel [EaterPDX]

The name of the Mercury's restaurant column, Last Supper, makes more sense than usual this week as Patrick Alan Coleman writes a eulogy instead of a review. The loved one is downtown coffeeshop Half and Half, which will close April 30 after ten years. Coleman writes that along with coffee and pie,

The Half and Half also offered pre-bumper-sticker Portland weirdness. One could always find something fascinating in the space, whether it was the monochromatic meadow mural or odd novelties. It's the kind of quirkiness that's seen less and less in the current slick Portland café zeitgeist.
Meanwhile over at Portland Food and Drink, the indefatigable Cuisine Bonne Femme offers a detailed round-up of Portland’s microdistilleries, with tasting notes and info on Southeast Portland’s Distillery Row.
Scientists say that warm weather this spring has caused the microbreweries to arrive early this year. Attendees at Migration Brewing Company's official grand opening party last weekend lined up for a preview taste of MPA, or Migration Pale Ale. All others will have to wait until the end of April to taste the brewery's flagship beer. The warehouse-y space with a big beer garden on N.E. Glisan near 28th opened "soft" in February, and has been serving outside micros on tap while waiting the final touches to its own brewing system. In fact some of the equipment is still not here, but a batch of MPA is being brewed down in Sisters, Oregon, at Three Creeks Brewing Company. It will make the journey to Portland, possibly by next weekend, depending on how El Nino effects the migration route.
·Migration Brewing Co. [Official Site]
