Thanksgiving pre-funk: Portland’s own first lady of comfort food Chef Lisa Schroeder of downtown mainstays Mother’s Bistro and Mama Mia Trattoria will appear on The Today Show on November 25th, the eve of Thanksgiving. In a true calorie-forward holiday spirit, Schroeder will promote her just-released book Mother’s Best (Taunton Press) by making warm apple crisp in front of 5.5 million or so NBC viewers during the 9am hour—all while Ann Curry prepares pear hazelnut crisp and Al Roker takes a stab at something called peach almond.

Schroeder will spend the entire holiday weekend in her native New York City, also appearing on QVC Sunday before heading back home for some Portland gigs, which include a book signing at Powell’s on Sunday December 6th, and a class dubbed Comfort Food 101 at Sur La Table on Wednesday the 16th.

Byron Beck chimes in on what may in fact be the undisclosed location of John Gorham's forthcoming brunch spot. Will Tasty & Sons take over Cafe Wonder? That's the rumor, says the sultan of scoop. Owners of other restaurants (including beloved Bunk Sandwiches) have kicked Cafe Wonder's tires in the past.

Despite what has been the worst economy for new restaurant ventures in decades, the Portland Business Journal reports the Rose City's thirst for beer has still not been sated. Portland is already said to be home to more breweries than any place on Earth, and 15 new brewpubs have opened in 2009 or will open in 2010, says the Biz Journal. One such watering hole is Coalition Brewing, which will set up shop in the space formerly home to Noble Rot on SE 28th and Ankeny Street.

·Brewpubs On Tap [Portland Business Journal]
