An Epic Look at Portland's 21 Favorite Vegan Dishes

View as Map

2008_10_hasmaps.jpeg

In last week's Friday Open Thread, Eater asked readers to name their favorite vegan dishes around town, and the response was overwhelming: More than 75 comments — some from longtime vegans, others from self-proclaimed meat eaters — flooded in to discuss the local vegan scene, with mentions for dedicated vegan restaurants to places that happen to offer solid vegan offerings.

Here now, a small sampling of that conversation, in the form of a map of 21 of Portland's Favorite Vegan Dishes, as voted by readers. The 21 dishes here just scratch the surface — for the original discussion, head here, and to continue the party, head over to the map's comments section.

Chef Gregory Gourdet offers an all-vegan menu at downtown's high-flying Departure, with one fan praising both the sweet potato tempura "sushi" roll and a spicy salt-and-pepper version of tempeh: "I love tempeh and nutritional yeast and spicy, so this is the mixture of all my favorite things in a way I could never figure out how to make it at home." Harlow just debuted a few weeks ago on SE Hawthorne, but this sister restaurant to Prasad has already earned fans. Votes came in for the Hawthorne Mac (a gluten-free and vegan mac and cheese) and the Thai collard wrap, described as having "amazing Flavors. Not spicy. Just right." [Photo]

Food cart Lazy K's puts a vegan spin on Louisiana cuisine, and its gumbo includes vegan Andouille sausage, okra, bell pepper, onion, and tomato. Says one reader: "I've never had gumbo before, so eating this was a revelation for me. And you can't find anything like this (made vegan) in Portland, so it's new, fresh and awesomely delicious!" Good news: the accompanying corn muffins are vegan, too. [Photo]
