It’s hard to argue the comforting power of the humble dumpling, especially during a pandemic. Nearly every culture has some version of a filled, unleavened parcel, whether it’s one of many regional Chinese styles, Japanese gyoza, Russian pelmeni, or Nepalese momos. With a sizable Eastern European population and a growing Asian American population, Portland’s dumpling game has gotten stronger than ever, with several global variations represented within city limits.

While dumplings come in many shapes and sizes, nobody can truly define the boundaries of what is and is not considered a dumpling; it’s as futile as definitively deciding whether a hot dog is a sandwich. This map includes a plethora of different types, but does not delve into dumplings like tamales, empanadas, or ravioli; this map also sticks to filled dumplings, not solid ones that might appear in dishes like chicken and dumplings. Finally, map points are not ranked; rather, they’re organized geographically.

A number of Portland restaurants have resumed dine-in service. The level of service offered is indicated on each map point. However, this should not be taken as endorsement for dining in, as there are still safety concerns. KungFu Noodle

While located out in suburban Vancouver, Kung Fu serves top-notch dumplings and comfort noodle dishes. While Kung Fu Noodle is clearly more of a noodle shop, it also offers a small array of dumplings in the appetizer section; the xiao long bao stand out the most, with a supple wrapper and plenty of piping-hot soup inside. Kung Fu offers takeout and delivery online and is also doing limited indoor seating for customers who want to dine-in.

Cute counter-service cafe Kargi Gogo proudly brings Georgian cuisine to Northeast Portland. Similar to a handheld version of a soup dumpling, khinkali are massive, about the width of a tennis ball. The beef-and-pork blend is folded and wrapped, and while the dumpling is boiled, the rendered fat mixes with a bit of water producing an explosion of flavorful broth. Kargi Gogo has a system for ordering online and offers both takeout and delivery.

While the menu at Northeast Portland’s Gado Gado has shrunk, the restaurant still slings some version of dumplings that change per chef Thomas Pisha-Duffly’s whim. Currently, the saucy chicken and leek dumplings are still on the menu, slathered in a chili oil sauce and full of warming chicken broth. The dumplings are available for takeout, delivery, or dine-in on the restaurant’s socially distanced patio. Patrons who can’t make the venture out to the restaurant may be able to find Gado Gado dumplings at New Seasons Market.

After opening a permanent restaurant earlier this year, Bao Bao has added new dumplings and buns to its menu. With fillings like mushroom, curried chicken, and sweet red bean, the restaurant ends up being a good choice for a group of diners with varied palates. And while many would debate that bao are not dumplings, Bao Bao also offers hand-made, thick and juicy pork or veggie dumplings, covered in cilantro and green onions. Bao Bao is currently only open for takeout, with online ordering available through its site here.

Afuri Ramen & Dumpling

With its second location now in full swing, the Southwest location of Tokyo-based Afuri offers an extended dumpling menu, crispy-frying its pork gyoza or slipping them into pristine chicken broth. The buta gyoza and the spicy gyoza soup are not to be missed, though vegetarians may prefer the restaurant’s miso cashew dumplings. Afuri is offering takeout or delivery at its website here.

Mama Chow's Kitchen

On a corner in the heart of downtown, Mama Chow’s has become a staple in the food cart scene. While famous for its lollipop wings, Mama Chows also serves tender chicken dumplings and wonton soup. The dumplings come pan-fried with a little green onion and sauce, but can be ordered deep-fried as well. The wonton soup is a perfect autumn comfort dish, with plenty of bok choy and a steaming hot broth made from simmering chicken wings and ginger. Mama Chow’s is open for walk-up takeout orders only.

This Buckman food cart has quietly been steaming up Nepalese momos since November 2017, neatly wrapping dumplings filled with pork, beef, or a vegetarian mix. Dumplings arrive with a traditional spicy dipping sauce called achar. Sherpa Kitchen is open for takeout and delivery.

Pelmeni Pelmeni

Located inside the Hawthorne Asylum carts, Pelmeni Pelmeni serves a combo of Ukranian and Russian food. The menu here is simple and consists of only three items: chicken pelmeni, potato vareniki, and sweet cheese vareniki. The first two are the savory dumplings that come topped with sour cream, Russian ketchup, dill, and green onions. The third option serves as dessert, filled with a sweet farmer’s cheese and topped with plenty of sour cream and fruit jam. While Pelmeni Pelmeni doesn’t do delivery, it does have the pod’s outdoor seating.

Duck House Chinese Restaurant

This PSU-area Chinese restaurant is a centrally located haven for deeply flavorful xiao long bao, but the restaurant’s Sichuan wontons, tossed in tingly chili oil, are the real showstoppers. Both dumplings are essential orders. Duck House is offering takeout, delivery, dine-in, and limited outdoor setting.

Master Kong

With hardwood floors and wood counters, Master Kong brought Tianjin and Taishan regional Chinese cuisine to SE Division. Master Kong offers a number of different dumplings, including xiao long bao, knobby little hand-made pork dumplings, and its stunning wonton noodle soup, each little parcel filled with shrimp, pork, and chewy wood ear mushrooms. Master Kong is currently closed for dine-in and is only offering takeout and delivery.

Famed for its family-style tables and service (think large rounds, lazy susans, and dim sum carts), HK Café has been a long-standing option for dim sum in the Foster-Powell neighborhood. Highlights include the shu mai, shrimp and taro dumplings, and shrimp har gow. HK cafe offers takeout, dine-in and delivery through delivery apps online.

Tan Tan Cafe & Delicatessen

Downtown Beaverton’s Tan Tan Deli has one of the most extensive Vietnamese menus in the Portland metro area, which is why it should not come as a surprise that it’s one of the only places that serves Vietnamese dumplings in town. While the pan-fried pork and vegetable dumplings are similar to potstickers, the banh gio is a whole different ballgame: These glutinous rice flour dumplings come steamed and wrapped in banana leaves, stuffed full of pork and wood ear mushroom. Tan Tan Deli is only offering takeout and delivery.

Once named among the world’s 10 best restaurants by the New York Times, Taiwanese-based chain Din Tai Fung opened a Washington Square Mall location, which means Oregonians eager to eat these world-famous soup dumplings don’t have to trek to Seattle for them anymore. The rewards for braving the typically long lines are juicy and meticulous paper-thin Kurobuta pork xiao long bao with 18 pleats, 16 grams of filling, and 5 grams of dough. Din Tai Fung is currently offering takeout and delivery onsite, with limited seating by reservation only.

A quaint Chinese restaurant located in a Happy Valley strip mall, Sichuan City offers a wide selection of Chinese dishes that are meant to be shared family-style. Among these are the wontons in chili oil, a standout on the menu and a favorite among most of the city’s Chinese restaurants. While many have a take on wontons in chili oil, not many offer a choice of dumpling shape: Sichuan City offers the regular wontons in chili oil, but also an alternative dumpling with thicker skin and a crescent shape — the latter holds up better for takeout and delivery. Sichuan City is open for delivery, takeout, and dine-in.
