Tacos from El Coyote in St. Johns
| Brooke Jackson-Glidden/EPDX

Portland isn’t exactly known for its Latin American food scene, especially when California’s goldmine of moles and arepas is a quick plane ride away. That being said, Portland still plays ball with some mind-boggling tacos, found in taquerias, food trucks, and tiendas all over town. Here's a look at some of Portland's finest tacos, from dripping guisados to super-crispy carnitas. Those readers who live on the other side of 205, don’t worry: A Gresham-specific taco map is coming soon. (Note: The points on this map guide are not ranked; rather, they're organized geographically.)

Don’t let the haphazard sign and makeshift plywood shelter fool you: This food cart makes some of the best carnitas not only in St. Johns, but in Portland. Potato-chip-crispy at its edges and massively flavorful, a single carnitas taco doesn’t go for more than $2.50.

4. Tamale Boy

Jaime Soltero, Jr. has paid his dues in the kitchen, first working for his parents at their Mexican restaurant, and then starting his own mobile tamale shop. Still, the kitchen at his restaurants put out so much more than tamales. In fact, his tacos could go toe-to-toe with those tamales — they may even be better. In the summer, they’re ideal on Tamale Boy’s insanely large and lively patio.

Tucked in the back of the Killingsworth Station food cart pod, Tehuana serves Oaxacan-style dishes to enjoy at the pod’s many tables or during a game of pool. The chipotle pork tacos on handmade tortillas are pure heaven with a squirt of the cart’s house-made, broodingly dark morita salsa.

9. Mi Mero Mole

Portland, OR 97209

Chef-owner Nick Zukin delivers a well-researched take on guisado-style tacos at this colorful Old Town standby. The filling comes in the form of a stew, whether of pork, beef, chicken, lamb, fish, meatballs, eggs, or farmers market vegetables, dropped into freshly made tortillas. Taco Tuesday hunters will dig Mi Mero Mole’s, when the restaurant throws an all-you-can-eat for under $15.

10. Taqueria Nueve (T9)

727 SE Washington St
Portland, OR 97214
(503) 954-1987
Visit Website

With its no-joke cocktails and contemporary space, T9 has become an inner-Southeast favorite. These tacos are pricey ($4 to $5) for a good reason: Where else will you find carnitas made with wild boar? From carnitas with silken fat and crispy bits and dark and moody camarones a la diabla, every taco on the menu is worth trying, but it’s sacrilege to miss the cochinita pibil: achiote-seasoned pork roasted in banana leaves.

11. Tight Tacos

602 SE Salmon St
Portland, OR 97214

Parked by Jacobsen Sea Salt near Grand Avenue, Tight Tacos has a cult following for its no-joke carnitas and spicy tinga tacos on house-made tortillas. Vegetarians will likely prefer the cauliflower tacos, pastor-style in an adobo marinade.

12. La Osita PDX

This Mill Park food cart quickly became a staple for its hardcore breakfast tacos: A fried egg cuddles a well-smoked slab of bacon among a mess of pickled onions and peppers, topped with fresh pico. The spicy habanero salsa, with a hearty slap of cumin, is an exceptional addition.

13. Por Qué No

4635 SE Hawthorne Blvd
Portland, OR 97215
(503) 954-3138
Visit Website

Por Qué No may be the most divisive taqueria in town. Both its colorful SE Hawthorne and N Mississippi locations always seem to have lines out the door — even when it rains — but cynics contend it's not worth the fuss. Still, PQN's tacos are tasty, particularly the braised-inside-banana-leaves barbacoa — a possible play on the traditional roast under agave leaves.

14. Tierra del Sol @ Portland Mercado

7238 SE Foster Rd
Portland, OR 97206

The great thing about Portland Mercado’s cluster of Latin American food carts is that diners can mix and match cuisines from all over Central and South America. But no visit is complete without Tierra del Sol’s tacos, all served on organic blue corn tortillas. Owner Amalia Sierra serves three of her deeply complex moles — a dark and robust coloradito, a vegetal verde, and a bright and lively amarillo — in tacos, an ideal solution for those wanting to try all three.

15. Panaderia Mexicana Cinco de Mayo

8416 SE 32nd Ave
Portland, OR 97222
(971) 206-1200

This Reed-area market serves some of the finest carnitas, asada, and cabeza tacos in Portland. All three are lusciously marbled with fat, with crispy edges on the asada and carnitas. The pastor is a sleeper hit; no, it’s not roasted on a trompo, but the marinade’s pairing of pineapple and guajillo is unforgettable.
