Where to Find Korean Fried Chicken in Portland and Beyond

Where to find yangnyeom-tongdak and dakgangjeong, from the chains to the food carts

View as Map

While Portland isn’t known for a rich Korean food scene, the thirst for Korean Fried Chicken is serious. When Bonchon finally opened an Oregon location this year, the international chain had to shut down the location’s online ordering, due to the massive demand that led to shockingly long wait times on opening day. Readers won’t need to worry about long queues though, as this map also has plenty of established KFC spots, from Beaverton to Happy Valley.

Korean fried chicken is celebrated for its crispness and sweet, lacquered sauces like a spicy yangnyeom or a sweet, garlicky dakgangjeong. The result is a sticky, juicy fried chicken that is hard not to obsess over. While not necessary by any means, a beer pairing is recommended for the full “Chimaek” experience (Suggested: Cass or Hite).

A number of Portland restaurants have resumed dine-in service. The level of service offered is indicated on each map point. However, this should not be taken as endorsement for dining in, as there are still safety concerns: for updated information on coronavirus cases in your area, please visit the Oregon Health Authority’s COVID update page. Studies indicate that there is a lower exposure risk when outdoors, but the level of risk involved with patio dining is contingent on restaurants following strict social distancing and other safety guidelines.

Note: The restaurants on this map are not ranked; rather, they’re organized geographically.

One Korean is a remarkable Korean spot boasting a huge menu of items that are both staples and hard-to-find Korean specialties. Within this menu, patrons will find sweet & spicy, soy garlic and original flavored fried chicken. Another KFC chain from Korea, ChiMcking serves extra crunchy boneless or bone-in wings in three flavors: soy garlic, hot king and extra hot king. While ChiMcking is still working on some menu items, it’s currently open for indoor and outdoor dining, takeout, and delivery.

Honey Spicy Bowl

Tucked away next to Joy Cinema in Tigard, Honey Spicy offers a variety of to-go Korean bowls and snacks. While the menu is brimming with options, the fried chicken is definitely the jewel in the crown: The chicken comes in honey spicy or honey soy sauce flavor, served in bowl with purple rice, salad, mashed potatoes, and macaroni or in popcorn chicken form with tots. Honey Spicy is currently only offering takeout and delivery and doesn’t have indoor or outdoor seating.

Chimaek Town

Located in the former Wild Wasabe space, Chimaek Town offers KFC in four flavors: honey butter, yangnyeom (sweet and spicy), soy garlic, and snow cheese, served as either wings or tenders with a side of pickled daikon. Eaters who like a good pairing should order one of the larger Korean hot pots: Korean army stew, beef bulgogi, or spicy rice cakes. Chimaek Town is open for takeout, outdoor dining, and delivery.

Han Oak’s KFC can be ordered in 3-piece or 6-piece options during dinner hours on the weekend and come with bread-and-butter daikon pickles. Ordering at Han Oak must be done online through this site, and has the option for no-contact curbside pickup. While Kkoki is mainly a Korean barbecue spot, the fried chicken here is no joke. Kkoki only serves the yangnyeom chicken, which is a small speck on the menu under the special dishes. The chicken should be accompanied by other dishes or sides on the menu, but comes as a heaping mountain and can easily feed two diners. Kkoki has two locations, one in SE Portland and the other in Beaverton. Both are doing indoor dine-in, takeout and delivery.

Bonchon Happy Valley - SE 82nd Ave
