Portland's Essential Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants, Spring 2018

A guide to Portland's most fun and delicious plant-based foods (aka 16 ways to convert carnivores).

View as Map

Vegans already know that Portland is where to be when it comes to legit meat-free food; the city's best vegan and vegetarian restaurants spotlight vegetables and grains with style and sophistication, skipping the lazy tofu substitutions and bizarre fake cheese. No more vegan specials like fries and a salad; in fact, this map specifically favors restaurants without a touch of meat on the menu.

Eater's latest update highlights some of Portland's newer vegetarian and vegan restaurants, with additions like Capitol, Ichiza Kitchen, Maruti Indian Restaurant, and an all-vegan food truck from Los Gorditos. Exiting with the latest update are Canteen, Harlow, Vtopia Cheese Shop, and Sweetpea Baking Company: all lovely, but it's time for the new gang to shine.

Chef Sean Coryell joined Harvest at the Bindery this past spring, and among his new dishes is the standout Harvest Hash Barbeque. It's smoked mushrooms, roasted lilies, and Padrón peppers on a rosemary skewer with lapsang-sherry barbeque, achiote rub, and a few accompanying sauces. Note the menu rotates regularly, but a similar version of a barbecue dish is usually available.

For some, the idea of "snacks" conjures images of packaged chips. Not so at Farm Spirit, chef Aaron Adams’s vegan fine-dining chef's counter opened in 2015. At the beginning of each meal, Adams prepares a platter of snacks like red kuri squash-stuffed buns, carrot jerky, and Ratte potato steeped in rosemary vinaigrette. The menu changes weekly.
