Various pantry items from the Paley’s Place Pantry. Paley’s Place is just one of many Portland restaurants that started grocery programs during the pandemic.

In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, many Portland restaurants started selling groceries alongside takeout family meals and meal kits, for those who felt nervous about heading into a supermarket as cases spread. It was an easy way for Portland diners to both support struggling restaurants and find highly sought-after ingredients they may not be able to access, from Snake River Farms beef to Ayers Creek polenta. Many restaurants even started their own CSAs, a way to support the Oregon farmers losing wholesale accounts left and right.

A year later, many restaurants have resumed some form of onsite dining or traditional takeout; however, some restaurants kept the pantry program going, as a way to ride out the storm, accrue a little extra income to make up for the deficit, and continue to support Oregon producers. With COVID-19 cases surging, some Oregonians — especially the unvaccinated ones — are still looking for ways to avoid the grocery store; this map has a few spots where you can order brunch or dinner takeout, while also stocking up on pantry basics and produce.

Portland is home to a true bounty of great specialty markets and delis, ranging from World Foods to Lily Market to Providore. This map really tries to focus on restaurants with a selection of groceries available for purchase, as well as a few restaurants with butcher’s counters, bakeries and cafes with pantry staples, and more. For an even wider selection of markets, groceries, butchers, and specialty good shops, our lengthy picnic and grocery guides may help.
