As temperatures drop and rainy season sets in, few things are as comforting as a piping hot bowl of soup. Many of Portland’s vegan and vegetarian restaurants offer seasonal soups year round, while others have rolled out rotating soup specials in response to the cooler weather. From fragrant Burmese samosa soup to velvety potato chowder, this map pinpoints 11 restaurants representing a variety of cuisines and neighborhoods. Those looking for more soups to cozy up to can browse the vegan noodle soups map.

Note: On November 18, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown initiated a two-week pause on Oregon indoor and outdoor dining; that pause will end and allow restaurants to reopen for outdoor dining in Multnomah County starting December 3. The level of service offered is indicated on each map point, however, the status of these restaurants may change soon; it’s best to call or check social media accounts for recent information. For updates on coronavirus cases in this area, please visit the Oregon Health Authority’s COVID update page. Also worth noting: This map is not ranked; rather, it’s organized geographically.

Kayo's Ramen Bar

Best known for its fiery tantanmen, this ramen bar in the Williams District is now serving vegetable dumplings in a vegan broth — the same umami rich, assari-style kombu, shiitake, and vegetable base served with the meatless ramen. Those familiar with Kayo’s crispy potstickers can enjoy this wintertime rendition of the same hand-wrapped dumplings, stuffed with kale, cabbage, ginger, and green onions. Takeout and delivery are available through the website.

This celebrated West African restaurant wows with its rich peanut butter stew, but the veggie pepper soup is not to be overlooked. Served with fufu or rice, the spicy pepper soup comes loaded with tender carrots, cabbage, sweet potato, and squash. Though it’s lighter than the vegan stews, it is equally as savory and complex. Akadi is available for pickup and delivery.

In the summer months, the beet bisque was a refreshing accompaniment to Epif’s causa rolls and other vegan takes on South American dishes. Customers can also enjoy that same soup hot, which amplifies the roasted, earthy flavors of the beets. This vibrant pink soup is served with a striking drizzle of the knockout house-made green chile and cilantro aji verde salsa. The restaurant is open for takeout and delivery.

Top Burmese

Top Burmese’s NW 21st location and Beaverton sister restaurant Bistro Royale both serve samusa thoke, a Burmese street food that showcases two of the restaurant’s strengths — light-yet-multilayered soups and flaky house-made samosas — side by side. Chopped samosas arrive swimming in a chickpea soup topped with crunchy vegetables and a generous sprinkle of masala spices. Customers can order takeout and delivery.

In addition to house-made deli cheeses and loaded mac and cheese, this all-vegan cheese shop in Goose Hollow also serves two rotating soups. Currently, Vtopia’s takeout and delivery menu includes a no-frills classic tomato soup for dunking grilled cheese sandwiches and an autumnal bisque with roasted butternut squash, carrots, and apples. New soups are announced regularly on Instagram.

Fermenter

Alongside house-made deli items like black bean tempeh burgers and cultured hazelnut cheeses, Fermenter’s menu also offers a rotating vegetable-heavy soup with fermented finishes — think: Koginut squash soup with fermented Jimmy Nardello pepper sauce, carrot salsa, toasted squash seeds, and bay-rosemary oil — for takeout or delivery out of the former Farm Spirit space on Belmont.

At this gluten-free cafe on Hawthorne, customers can find a vegetable curry soup and chipotle black bean chili among the healthy-but-comforting menu of brunch scrambles and green smoothies. To round it out into a complete meal, Harlow serves the soups with a side of rice, quinoa, or greens. Soup specials, such as a chanterelle and pumpkin soup topped with pepitas, are announced regularly on Instagram. The cafe is open for takeout and delivery.

Pixie Retreat

Although Pixie Retreat specializes in raw vegan creations, from dehydrated eggplant bacon sandwiches to coconut cashew pudding cups, it also serves one popular hot item through the colder months: a silky potato chowder packed with hearty vegetables. Takeout and delivery via numerous services are available at both the Pearl and Eastside cafes.

In addition to Thai curries and noodle dishes, Kati serves meatless renditions of creamy coconut-based tom kha and hot-and-sour tom yum, which uses mushrooms in lieu of shrimp. Available for pickup and delivery, both soups are packed with vegetables and tofu swimming in a fragrant medley of galangal, lemongrass, and Makrut lime leaves, green onion, and cilantro.

Lokanta

Lokanta, one of the newest additions to Clinton Street, serves stunning rustic Turkish mezze, including its latest cold weather offering: mercimek çorbasi, a Turkish lentil soup, served with bread and a sprinkling of mint. The red lentils are simmered with spices, purple potatoes, and Baldo rice to create this rich, hearty soup with intense depth of flavor. Pre-order on the website for pickup.
