Oregon, as a state, is very game-friendly — it even hosts a food festival dedicated to it. So, it’s no surprise that Portland home to several restaurants, bars, and food carts serving lamb, boar, elk, or venison, whether it’s in a chili, plated as a steak with sunchokes, or, in the case of this map, ground into a patty and flipped on a grill. Truly wild proteins, like venison, have a far smaller carbon footprint than beef, and that grassy, funky flavor of game is hard to replicate elsewhere. The map below includes everything from simply adorned house-ground lamb patties to venison burgers topped with shoyu-marinated pineapple. Per usual, this map isn’t ranked; it’s organized geographically.

Note: Health experts consider dining out to be a high-risk activity for the unvaccinated; it may pose a risk for the vaccinated, especially in areas with substantial COVID transmission.

The pickle mustard mayonnaise complements the pronounced flavor of the venison; it pairs well with pretty much any whiskey behind the bar. Southland is open for onsite dining, takeout, and delivery.
